HomelessnessHomelessness is a major problem in the United States, even in Indiana. The Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority in collaboration with Continuum of Care in its annual Balance of State point-in-time homelessness assessment announced 4,398 individuals were homeless in Indiana as of January 2023 (excluding Marion County). Sadly 18% of these homeless individuals were classified unsheltered, meaning they lived on the street or in abandoned buildings.
Homelessness is not just a big city problem. We know it affects Bedford and Lawrence County too as evidenced by the clients utilizing the Men’s Warming Shelter and Becky’s Place. Utilization of the Men's Warming Shelter has increased dramatically over the years. During the 2016-2024 winter seasons, 429 different homeless clients were served, totaling 10,925 overnight stays. Nationwide statistics indicate men represent 60% of homeless individuals. What are the major reasons for homelessness:
